I admit, I am not a huge football fan. (Take me to a Preds game, please!) But when college football rolls around, I have to root for Alabama. I’ve grown up here in Tennessee, and I’ve tried to like the Vols. Really. But I’m from Birmingham and my dad was the biggest Alabama football fan. I remember how excited he’d be getting ready for the season to start, especially back in the old Bear Bryant days. It just seems wrong for me to pull for any other team.
Our stores are located in Tennessee, but we carry a wide range of college and pro teams along with the expected healthy dose of UT merchandise. It always cracks me up a little when customers come to the counter with something other than Vols and expect that since we work here, we automatically pull for a Tennessee team. They’ll say something like, “I know this isn’t orange, but I’m sure you’ll let me buy it anyway. . . ” Granted, we have our share of Vols fans working here, but I am not counted in that group. When the Crimson Tide plays, I think of my dad, and how he would smile and enjoy seeing them win. And I hope dearly that they do.
I’m reminded of my dad each summer when it gets close to football time again, and we start to see a lot of customers come in asking for our latest Alabama stuff. (Alabama football fans are some of the nicest customers on earth!)
If you haven’t called your dad in a while, pick up the phone. Time goes by too fast.
